A newer router is not always the first fix for a weak connection. Start by finding out where the slowdown begins, then choose the least complicated remedy.
Measure the problem
Run a speed test near the router and again in the room where service is poor. If both results are slow, investigate your internet service or modem before spending on new Wi-Fi equipment.
Test at different times of day and on more than one device. A single device may be the limiting factor.
Move the router into the open
A central, elevated position is often better than a cabinet or corner. Thick walls, metal objects, and nearby electronics can all affect the signal reaching another room.
Know when an upgrade makes sense
If the router is old, no longer receives security updates, or cannot cover the space even after better placement, a newer model may be worthwhile. Map the rooms that need service before choosing between one router and a mesh system.
